An Israeli airstrike had crushed an apartment block in the Jabaliya refugee camp, in northern Gaza, killing 45 members of his extended family. Mr. Abujayyab and his siblings argued about her next move: Stay at her grandmother’s apartment? Mr. Azmi, the Crisis Group researcher, had moved his family to a friend’s house in southern Gaza. It fractured his skull and crushed his chest, Mr. Azmi said by phone. They had no power, limited internet and more bombs were falling, his sister said in a voice message to her family.

Today, with people still struggling to understand the contours of this deeply complicated conflict, the book seems essential. “Because that was absolutely the ambition of the book, to depict real people” rather than villains and saints. Because I admire “A Day in the Life of Abed Salama” so much, I agreed to moderate a talk with Thrall this Thursday in Brooklyn. And in a time of war, particularly a war shrouded in fiercely competing narratives, free speech is more important than ever. And supporters of Israel are hardly alone in creating a censorious atmosphere; particularly on college campuses, it is Zionists who feel silenced and intimidated.

Image Palestinians wounded in Ahli Arab Hospital blast were later treated at another hospital in Gaza on Tuesday. Israel said the strike on the hospital parking lot was caused by a misfired Palestinian rocket, citing intelligence intercepts and videos of the sky above Gaza at the time. Al Jazeera, a Qatari news channel, concluded that a Palestinian rocket had been intercepted by an Israeli air defense missile. Scores of public institutions in northern Gaza, including hospitals like the Ahli Arab hospital, were warned by Israel to evacuate. American intelligence agencies have assessed that the blast killed 100 to 300 people.

Within an hour of the blast on Tuesday night, the Hamas-run Gazan health ministry accused Israel of attacking the Ahli Arab hospital, a medical center in Gaza City where scores of families had been sheltering. The claim was widely cited by international news outlets, including The New York Times, before Israel issued its denial. Raising further questions about Hamas’s claims, the impact site turned out to be the hospital parking lot, and not the hospital itself. On Sunday, Hamas turned down requests by The Times to view any available evidence of the munition it said had struck the hospital, claiming that it had disintegrated beyond recognition. “The missile has dissolved like salt in the water,” said Ghazi Hamad, a senior Hamas official, in a phone interview.

TEL AVIV—Hamas released two U.S. citizens taken hostage in the Gaza Strip, amid rising pressure on Israel to put off a planned invasion on the enclave to allow time for diplomacy. The release was the first time Hamas, the Islamist group that controls the enclave, set free any of the roughly 200 hostages taken by militants during a raid on Oct. 7 that killed more than 1,400 Israelis. Citizens of 41 countries were killed and went missing during the attack, an unprecedented cross-border incursion by militants from Gaza. The U.N. said Friday that 4,137 Palestinians have been killed.

The U.S. has collected “high confidence” signals intelligence showing that the explosion at a Gaza hospital compound on Tuesday was caused by the militant group Palestinian Islamic Jihad, U.S. officials said, buttressing Israel’s contention that it wasn’t responsible for the blast. The U.S. assessment drew, in part, on communications intercepts and other intelligence gathered by the U.S., defense officials said.

"We tried to save whoever could be saved but the number was too great for the hospital team," he said. REGION IN CRISISAn injured person is assisted at Shifa Hospital after hundreds of Palestinians were killed in a blast at Al-Ahli hospital in Gaza City, October 17. Israel's military on Wednesday published what it described as evidence that a misfired Palestinian rocket caused the hospital explosion. Before Tuesday's blast, health authorities in Gaza said at least 3,000 people had died in 11 days of Israeli bombardment. A Gaza civil defence chief gave a death toll of 300 at the hospital, while health ministry sources put it at 500.

"There is currently no truce and humanitarian aid in Gaza in exchange for getting foreigners out," a statement from his office said. Rafah, which is on the border between Egypt's Sinai Peninsula and Hamas-governed Gaza, is the only crossing into the territory not controlled by Israel. The Egyptian sources said the ceasefire would last for several hours but they were not clear on the exact duration. They also said the three countries had agreed that Rafah would be open until 1400 GMT on Monday as a one-day initial re-opening. A security source and NGO source in Al-Arish said that aid trucks were still waiting there after the re-opening at 0600 GMT.

Israel has unleashed the fiercest bombardment on the Gaza Strip to hit back at the Palestinian militant group Hamas after it carried out the deadliest attack on Israel for decades. “The hospital morgue can only take 10 bodies, so we have brought in ice cream freezers from the ice cream factories in order to store the huge numbers of martyrs,” said Dr. Yasser Ali of the Shuhada Al-Aqsa hospital in Deir Al-Balah. The freezer trucks, whose sides still show advertising images of smiling children enjoying ice cream cones, are normally used to make deliveries to supermarkets. Authorities in Gaza said Israeli air strikes had killed more than 2,300 people, a quarter of them children, with nearly 10,000 wounded so far. “The Gaza Strip is in crisis and if the war continues in this way we will not be able to bury the dead.

"This amounts to approximately 1.1 million people," Dujarric added, or nearly half of Gaza's 2.3 million population. The areas north of Wadi Gaza include Gaza City, the enclave's largest city. Israel's military did not immediately provide comment on the warning, which came as it amassed tanks near the Gaza border and pounded the enclave with air strikes. Israel has responded so far by putting Gaza under siege and launching a bombing campaign that destroyed whole neighbourhoods. Israeli air strikes on Gaza began soon after the Hamas attack and continued overnight and into Sunday, destroying the group's offices and training camps, along with houses and other buildings. Like other technical analysts, Salama sees wisdom in mirroring the crowd, but trend-following indicators can also provide crucial contrarian buy or sell signals. Stocks have downward momentum, and the SPY just fell through the 434 level, which Salama said was key technical support. The value of the SPY is roughly one-tenth that of the S&P 500, so that corresponds to a break below 4,344 for the index. The SPY, a popular ETF mirroring the S&P 500, is oversold, according to the RSI (in blue). 5 high-upside stocks to buy nowAfter outlining his market outlook, Salama shared five stocks he's bullish on right now and gave a price target for each.
